Pumpkin beer tasting.

Fall in Philadelphia is the perfect season to spend time outdoors-- it isn't too hot, cold or rainy (usually). We all gathered on my roof deck last Saturday for a pumpkin beer tasting, along with chicken corn chowder (recipe here) and bread from 4th Street Deli.

The final line-up.

The final line-up.

Our number one pumpkin beer: Elysian's "The Great Pumpkin Ale" (8.1% ABV). It's an Imperial Ale with a solid pumpkin flavor and the perfect balance of fall spices.

Our favorite local pumpkin beer: Dogfish Head's "Punkin Ale" (7% ABV).

Our least favorite pumpkin beer: We couldn't actually agree on one. At least one of us didn't like the following three:  Uinta's "Punk'n Harvest Pumpkin Ale" (it tasted like earth to some), Traveler Beer Company's "Jack-O Traveler Pumpkin Shandy" (too much lemon) and Manayunk Brewing Company's "Yunkin' Punkin" (too much pumpkin, not enough spice).

I think next time, we might try double-blind beer tasting for more accurate picks. Good thing we love seasonal beers. Up next, winter ales!
